Dhiraagu's Fibre Optic Cable or Submarine Satellite?

Yesterday was supposed to be a memorable day for all of us… do I need to say it again? … ok if u say so..

Yeah DHIRAAGU ( dhivehi – raajeyyge –gulhun) supposedly launched the first submarine cable in Maldives… happy aren’t we? But for what…. Yes, for cheaper and more superior quality service… and I’m not saying Dhiraagu’s submarine cable is not going to take any of those away from us… hopefully, a submarine cable is got to do what a submarine cable’s got to do right?

Ok back to my point… I just want to take notice on some minute details I came across in the whole launching of it..

Did it really happen? Did the first call made via the submarine cable get disconnected TWICE?
Ok… it did really happen… and think abt it.. if I did not know any better I would be saying.. “ is this the quality submarine cable brings?” … coz I can call a friend of mine in Singapore on my skype phone on dialup and still have a better conversation..

Something bothered me and I tried to get a bit more information and it came to my attention that the call was NOT made through cable BUT via SATELLITE… but they said it was fibre optic cables at the end of each sentence eh… and after calling 123 numerous times last night.. and got hold of her (after waiting IN LINE for 10 minutes) at around 2045hrs.I was even able to get the lady over there to agree with me on this as well…

So how come Dhiraagu “so called” launched a product which did not really exist in the first place… I mean yeah they have the cable in Maldives now and it’s going to work as well for sure… but just because Wataniya was going to launch their cable sometime soon , Dhiraagu wanted to FAKE a whole event JUST to TOUCH MALDIVES first.

Hopefully Dhiraagu’s services will be able to make best use of the fiber optic cables soon, but today at this second.. I don’t think so… throughout the whole ceremony they were only able to say.. WE WILL, WE CAN, WE COULD and more of WE WILL… but there was not a single WE HAVE…. Mere speculation, which in fact would mostly be true to be honest.. but as a customer I would have loved to see something there…. ( but remember… its not fully functional so can’t happen)

Anyway back to the point… having a ceremony saying “official launch of the Submarine Cable” and not showing us anything of the submarine cable.. and faking a whole conversation with the president, claiming it was the first call made through the cable abroad, while in reality it was a normal satellite call.. it’s a bit funny isn’t it…

It’s not funny actually.. it’s just another tactic to ‘andhun alhuvaning” the general public… simple as that ..

Guys.... the fibre link is between Lanka and the Maldives. President was in Singapore. The call to the president went to Lanka over fibre and the rest went through satallite or through some other means, which is beyond Dhiraagu's control. The call from Lanka telecoms CEO was of good quality... no disruptions. So the cable is okay... when we comment or write, we should look into facts....

"the fibre link is between Lanka and the Maldives. President was in Singapore.". ok! so means nothing will change? we need to bring the whole of internet, etc to Lanka?. now i am sad. we spent 27 million USD on this kind of service? oh I get it. The other party have not launched so the service will be bad. Same went for internet and mobiles too. Dhiraagu only acts when they feel they will loose more money. Look at the land line prices, nothing much changed. Or improved. We need to bring in another party for that too. My internet bill use to be 5000 MRf a month. And they tell us, that it was initial investment that forced for the high price. What about focus? They got it for free? Did't they have to make that investment and even Wataaniyya? Please Dhiraagu.

hey anonymous?

do you have any idea how the cable works? just because the cable is between Male' and Lanka mean that we can connect to only lanka at high speeds? i have no technical knowledge to really back all this up in detaiol and would appreciate if someone can post a comment on this issue explaining it to everyone in a bit more detail.

thank you

This was absolutely shameful if Dhiraagu really pulled it off. This is a straight forward misleading of consumers and the public. And as for what some person has said which the cable is only between lanka and male', the cable purpose is to link up maldives with the worldwide network through lanka. We should have flawless communication to any country now.

people.. u shud really get a hang of urself.. i dont see any facts in your article.. just bcos the call didnt connect the first time it doesnt mean the submarine cable didnt function well.. it functioned well dudes.. it is fully operational.. the call was via cable.. Dhiraagu really touched the world.. Go with the Best Go with Dhiraagu!!!

A technology known as Sattemarine Sublite Dible was used by Dhiraagu, which roughly translates to:

"an observation of the mystical phenomena commonly known as disconnections occuring on Satan sphere telecommunications links done via non-existent white shark fishing lines"

Seriously, how many fishermen cut their fishing lines? We had fibre optic cables in the sea before we got marine engines. But like the relationship with our president and our people, the relationship between the service industry and the citizens, the majority of the wives and husbands, the fibre optics laid out by our ancestors were just disconnected.

get over it. they tried to fool you. only this time you people knew it.

i think need to sleep.

dhiraagu's lanka cable will be used to transfer TEA and DRY FISH (umbulakada) between maldives and lanka

with wataniya's india cable, maldivian prostitues can make online abortions (through the trivandrum hub station)

This isnt the first time dhiraagu has done something like this. Once a company has a monopoly, it'll remain in it's attitude always.

Interesting!!!

i really wonder what the official launch meant!! if a cable is not ready and not 'fully' operational.. why launch it at all?

i may not know much but isn't it the norm for organizations to actually use whatever products or services for a while (fully operational and live) before going for the actual 'official launch'

in this case it seems like the official launch was the prelim testing done?

does anyone from dhiraagu have a comment to make?

At 18 December, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

someone from Dhiraagu already made a comment...

i wonder what is up with everyone and these submarine cables. seriously, what do you expect from it? to become rich? go to heaven? i think we are all just bored.

mobile call charges in this country have dropped from sky high to world standard lows, and i think it is the most important teleco service. only a handful of you will seriously benifit from the submarine cables (cheap IDD calls are what you are thinking right?) but hey i thought there were other alternatives even before.. skype and stuff anyone?

yes you are going to get XMbps internet access in your homes at a (relatively) dirt cheap rate... for what? so that you can get the new Heroes episodes a few hours earlier?

what we REALLY need to do is...

... to evacuate this country (we are already a generation late at that).

what the hell are you girls talking about?

yes ashraf, the prices have skyrocketed down to a world standard low...and i doubt it is going to get any cheaper because i am sure no one wants to go into a price war

however keeping that aside, reducing the prices is not the only thing. with the development in technology and the connection of the submarine cable etc, we are connected to the world in a way we have never been, but in the mean time on being connected and having cheap calls is not the only thing we want as customers.

We want the poeple who have the authority to do so, to utilize these services and give us better products and services. its as simple as that

and with respect to dhiraagu's submarine cable launch!! BUAHAHAHAAH! im kidding... at least u did something by faking it as well, but lets see the new services and offers rolling soon.

At 19 December, 2006, Blogger Daadi said...

ashraf,

i quite agree with you to the fact that mobile services are very reasonable for a market of our size. but that isn't the issue here,

u mentioned Skype, sure.. not a stranger to us, Skype, yahoo voice, an so the list goes.. but what you forget is, a reasonable internet connection is required to actually use these services properly...

i do have a hyped up 256kbps connection at home, which i'd be lucky to get 64kbps as it's probably shared with a few zillion other users ( ok, maybe not as much.. but you get the picture ) using any voip services on it is almost next to impossible most of the time.

ahem.. now not being very fair... a similarly advertised 256k package in another country actually gives you a reasonable speed... :) but lets not worry abt that shall we?

online gaming.. the lag is so huge.. i'd be fragged within 2 seconds of loggin into any international server. sad part is.. i woudnt even be able to see it comming at me :p

do u even want to talk abt apple movie trailers and youtube or any other streaming media?

lets not forget the precious seconds (that translates cumulatively into mins an hours) we waste staring at a page loading bar!!!

what i'm tryin to say here, its not jus that torrent file we're trying to get, i jus mentioned a fraction of the things that could change.
that X mbps connection if offered for a reasonable rate is gonna affect even the everyday internet user. And a submarine cable could offer that if implemented properly and services are put on top of it.

that being said...

anyone up for a coffee? early morning coffee deprivation!!!!

you all should get off the Internet and try to do something useful.

start fishing. make some good exports and earn a better living.

paying all what you earn to Dhiraagu or Wataniya is not helping any of you.. the government is playing a dirty game with all these players. yes, even you, you, Dhiraagu, Wataniya, and you... all are players in this dirty game.

wen we hav no alternative. we have to. :(

At 20 December, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

fatty,

i really hope the lower teleco rates will boil down to lower running costs for different businesses so that people (the majority of the country, who do not use internet and international calls directly) can actually benifit from it. i hardly think ANY price tag on ANYthing would go down, except the international phone calls and internet of course, which again the majority of the population do not use.

if anyone should actually suffer from the submarine cables, it would be the cable tv providers. when people start getting media centers and IPTV channels from the net and use torrent feeds to get Kasoti/Heroes on their devices (not to forget various free services like democracytv and some websites through which u can watch channels like national geopgrahic for free).

the submarine cables bring more benifits and more money making opportunities for the providers themselves, rather than directly revolutionizing the average citizen's life. sadly that IS the case. i hope you know what i mean.

Dhiraagu is still trying to cheat the people.pls stop this.its enough for u guys.stop playing games and try to doing something good.
Actually in maldives we have three company in this feild and each one is trying to have their own cable, its called bull shit.
I know dhiraagu is mainly depending on goverment and they have enough money to own not only one cable.
what i think is when dhiraagu starts fiber optics cable in male they cannot give maximum speed to customer in copper cable.
So as one guy said dhiraagu will use their cable not to transfer data or voice.they will use their cable to transfer TEA and dry fish (UMBULAKADA) between maldives and Sri Lanka.

I'd say im proud of Dhiraagu, for the excellent project they have completed. The international cable and the local cables laid and functional. They did it and they started the service on it for the first time. But what was wataniyas cable doing, wataniya focus and Tam, making a lot of noise about it about the new services and stuff, boosting the expectation of us, like always. But it lays asleep under water :)
Local part of the project was menaged by Dhiraagu's local staff, I'm sure it would have been new and a good experience to those involved.
And they were naive enough to make the first attempt to start the service, even with a call drop. As someone mentioned here already, fisherman cut their fishing lines even the experts do, but wat do they do? make a joint and and start fishing again, its with mistakes an errors that you improve i'm sure their experience would be worth the try and worthwhile. The call was made via the submarine cable, but people do you think that the cable is connected to all the countries in the region, I'm sure still there will be countries who depend on satellite communications, do you know how much Singapore relies on satellite communication and carriers. Wake up people dont just dodge the ball here and there think a lil bit before you start blabbering. Im sure the next cable even though not operational would bring about a lot of changes, improvement and a lot of good news. But hey wats so good about laying a cable and keeping it un operational.
Keep smiling, alot better or perhaps worse yet to come.

point still remains!!

wat was the point of a inaguration ceremony... IF the cable is not fully operational?

as stated before.. dont ppl usually inagurate stuff when it is in full operation.. jus to formalise an announce to the world its working as intended...

this seems more like a field test that they felt the need to announce an publicise in the wrong context.

the cable is not fully operational, has not been switched over, there has not been any indication otherwise...

THAT is my issue with this.. :)

yes... true.. true.. true... STILL the point is.. what was the point of that whole ceremony? hehe.. yeah Focus and Wataniya might be sleeping on their cables.. but atleast they have not tried to fake the general public...

"Local part of the project was menaged by Dhiraagu's local staff, I'm sure it would have been new and a good experience to those involved."

are u claiming that Focus and Wataniya does not have any Maldivians involved?heheh.. a strong statement :)

"But hey wats so good about laying a cable and keeping it un operational."

exactly!

even if it is so...still dosent negate the issue of

"why launch something in test phase as operational. when it isnt?"

is it

- to do something first, even if it means misinforming the public.

- to prove they can get a signal? if so. they should have said it was jus in test call. proof of concept if you may. not an bloody ceremony

dhiraagu agrees that their services have not been switched over to the fiber just yet

so either way. it was a marketing stunt where public was mislead.
