Nail Down Your Connection Speed!! Dhiraagu Unlimited Package Review
So it has been a while since Dhiraagu released its "Unlimited" adsl package. The first package from dhiraagu to be so. Many of us were very excited about the package being launched and rushed to sign up screaming "weeeeee... unlimited internet.... finally!! "......oh how wrong were we!!!
Dhiraagu's old 256kbps home user package the 'baraboa' one supposedly had a contention of 1:200 as so it was mentioned on dhiraagu's website as well as TAM. the new Unlimited package is supposed to have a contention of 1:75 according to TAM (http://www.tam.gov.mv/articles.php?artID=69) of coz the lower the contention the less sharing is done between users... well at least thats the way it usually is. wonder if i have this all wrong.
i do know dhiraagu has been very explicitly stating that the connection speed is not guaranteed.... no kidding!!!??? the connection i try to use seems to have a data cap set on it!!! or maybe its just my imagination.......
the above is just for HTTP downloads, starting at 1 something in the AM going on till well 7 AM. reason i used HTTP is, coz its most likely that all other protocols will be limited or http will be prioritized. i donno wat. but the fact of the matter is using a few download accelerators , coupled with normal http downloads pointed at different ends of the web, i've been tryin to sqeeze my connection to the limit. somehow it seems to be stuck at 30Mega Bytes per hour or less... it just dosent seemt to go any higher? is this just me or anyone else tried it?
hmm lets seee it usually averages around 28-30 per hour so.. lets jus say 29 MB as an average...(up and down)
29MB x 1024 = 29696KB x 8 = 237568 kbits / hour
237568kbits / 3600 seconds = 65.99kbps.... or 8.24 Kbytes /sec
(probably around 64kbps if you account for uploads)
did i get that right? any calculation errors? my bit to byte converter might be a bit rusted but if i got that right the average connection speed i get is around 64kbps
i donno.... is it just happening to me? does it seem fair to advertise a package as 256/64 when the average speed one receives is around 64kbps....
non guaranteed or not!! this isn't exactly any better than what focus used to offer.... and isn't useful for nythin other than surfing or chatting... if thats your cup of tea.. then ur better off with the 1GB baraboa package as its unlikely ur gonna exceed the usage with browsing or chatting, plus it's faster..
anythin more than that, like skyping, webcam, jus too slow to be even bloody useful......
well dhiraagu, jus have to say it's a disappointing package. but guys with enuf patience can put on their download accelerator shoes and maybe skim a few gigs of data off a month.... (don't even bother with torrents.... protocols other than HTTP seem to be on some limiter)

hehe
to be honest with respect to internet packages, there is no real alternative eh.
i used dhiraagu one, changed to ROL which was a forcde itself to be reckoned with coz i had to wait 15 seconds for google to load up..
and currently im using the "barabo" package which itself aint too good either.. but as u said, its way better than the "fiesta" Unlimited.
and having unlimited ADSL package in our homes and for them to act slower than a normal dialup connection is quite amusing.
It is damn troublesome and stupid. I've never had a DSL before where the modem connects via USB. Arrrgh!
Stupid and slow dhiraagu.. still relying on satellite though claiming they launched submarine cable...
i would liek to make some comments with regard to the press release by Dhiraagu on the release of the Unlimited package..

Dhiraagu is pleased to announce the introduction of a new ADSL Home User Unlimited package specially designed for residential customers who wish to limit their Internet bills.
Yes...intention seems to be all right!
This is a product especially for customers who give priority for both speed and unlimited internet
speed? NO.... unlimited? sorta.. coz what we can download is very much limited by the crappy speed.. so cant say totally unlimited...
The introduction of this new home user package will make reliable unlimited broadband Internet available for those families who wish to control their internet bills.
control their internet bills.. hmm.. YES! i guess so..
so the bottom line is.. no matter how crappy the package is.. their intention and what they are providing makes perfect sence so i guess DHIRAAGU did in fact convey the msg that this is JUST for "limiting" internet bills...
Recently i wnet to repair one of my friends computer. He said he having virus problem and i try to download virus update from Symatec.he is having Dhiraagu "BARABO PACKAGE" Home user unlimited package.Seriouly am getting dowmload limit at the speed o0f 3.5kbps.and thats night around 10pm.samething i tried in ROL unlimited package.Their speed is much faster, relaible and more stable.its getting download speed at 24.5kbps.
Dhiraagu home user package is just bull shit and its dame slow.by seeing that we can say its a must to control internet bill rather then downloading unlimited.thats why they are showing a hammer in their BARABO advertisment.what we need is not a cheap package like BARABO package.what we need is cheap and fast package like ROL.
the "barabo" package isn any gud!! oh wel, the connection is slow at times. but the modem i bought from dhiraagu has a reeeaaal big problem. each time i connect, my PC restarts. and once i told em i think itz happening coz of the modem, they stopped helping me out. how rude!! i paid 650 bucks to get da damn thing. hmph
I agree with the previous comment about the dsl modem which dhiraagu gives. It is a true nightmare. Its a USB modem, hence making it very troublesome especially if the system has more than one user account. They didnt even tell me what kind of modem they will give me, and worst they wouldnt even change it after I had USB conflict, I had to fork out another 750/- and get a D-Link ADSL modem and throw away the stupid Dhiraagu modem.
I am not sure about the ROL, since I've never tried it, I thought Dhiraagu would be better. Arrgh. Even my voip phone isnt working. I think its also cause of the unstable connection.
i was having a adsl home user light package before the service of submarine cable. and the speed was so slow. i used a download manager and it is abt 15 kbps. but after introducing their cable the line speed also increased . but it gets fluctuated. i hav sum frends in lanka and they used to tell the net is fast there also . but its fluctutaing in there also . so this is how dhiraagu is .no consistent in their speeds.but ROL hav 1500 rf unlimited package which is abt 30 kbps for sure. and no fluctuations.
so this is all abt the government and dhiraagu .
